Xeroxes (see Admin. History below). The arrangement of the xeroxes, carried out by P.D.A. Harvey, is exactly the same as that of the original papers which were in Darlington's study when he died. It is by a sequence of numbered files of papers, corresponding to the sequence of 'bundles' found in Darlington's study. Serial numbers for each xerox page were stamped on the back. A typewritten label was stuck onto each file, giving the file number and the range of the serial numbers contained in that file. All this information has been reproduced for each file in the following list, as well as Darlington's chapter numbers and titles where they appear. The individual file units represent groups of papers found in various places in Darlington's study. Offprints (often annotated by Darlington) are sometimes found with the xeroxes.

Admin History: 'A Diagram of Evolution' was the Book on which Darlington was working just before his death in 1981. He was contracted to write it for publication by Oxford University Press and had intended it to consist of ten chapters, illustrated wth many diagrams. Following Darlington's death, drafts of the five completed chapters were sent to a number of leading biologists for their views on the viability of preparing the material for publication. It was eventually decided that publication would not serve any useful purpose. Following discussions with P.D.A. Harvey, Darlington's stepson and executor, the original drafts and notes for the book were deposited, with the rest of the Darlington papers, in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. The material that was accepted by the John Innes Centre consists of P.D.A. Harvey's xeroxes of all drafts, notes and other material relating to the book and offprints which were not wanted by the Bodleian Library. This is the material described in the following list.
