Admin History: Fruit breeding at the John Innes Institute was initially carried out in the Pomology Department (formally constituted 1937 under Morley Benjamin Crane). The name was changed to the Department of Plant Breeding during the tenure of Watkin Williams as head of department (1954-1961). In 1961 this became the Department of Applied Genetics, headed by KH Dodds (1961-1966) and D Roy Davies (1968-1994), during which period the focus of the department broadened and moved away from breeding as an end in itself.; Mgt Group: Private Records
