Admin History: Dr P V Thorogood (BSDB Hon. Secretary 1988-1993): Peter Thorogood (23/7/1947 - 25/8/1998) was a developmental biologist known for his research work on the development of cranio-facial structures in the embryo and foetus, and on the origin of birth defects of the head and neck. He graduated in Zoology from the University of Aberystwyth and worked for a PhD in developmental biology under the supervision of Professor Richard Hinchliffe. Between 1971 and 1978, Thorogood worked as a research scientist in the Universities of London, Nova Scotia, Glasgow and Oxford before, in 1979, moving to Southampton University as Lecturer, and later as Senior Lecturer, in biology. In 1989 he became Professor of Oral Biology at the Institute of Dental Surgery, at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London. His remit was to establish developmental biology as a bridge to link the emerging science of human genetics and the clinical disciplines of dentistry and maxillo-facial surgery. In 1992 he became Professor of Development Biology at the Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. He died after a fall from the 4,000m Jungfrau mountain in the Swiss Alps. Martin H Johnson (BSDB Chairman 1984-1989): Martin Hume Johnson (born 1944) FRS FMedSci FRSB FRCOG, emeritus professor of Reproductive Sciences in the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience (PDN) at the University of Cambridge MA, Cambridge and PhD (1969) for immunochemical analysis of factors affecting fertility, elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) in 2012, Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2014. Johnson is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB). Dr Mary Bownes (BSDB Treasurer 1984-1989): Mary Bownes (1948- ) OBE FRSE FRES FRSB is an English molecular and developmental biologist; she is Vice Principal Community Engagement and Emerita Professor of Developmental Biology at the University of Edinburgh. Ph.D (1973) University of Sussex on drosophila embryos, research on oogenesis and embryogenesis in drosophila at the University of Freiburg, University of California, Irvine and University of Essex before settling at the University of Edinburgh in 1979. She was appointed Professor of Developmental Biology in 1993 and Head of the Institute of Cell and Molecular Biology in 1998. Elizabeth A Jones (BSDB Treasurer 1989-1994) Dept. Biological Sciences, Warwick University (Prof. Elizabeth A Oliver-Jones)-'Research interests at Warwick focus around the study of early cell interactions in amphibians, relatively little is known about the molecular mechanisms by which vertebrate embryos achieve the myriad of complex patterns and cell types found in the adult animal.'
