Admin History: Graham Hussey was one of the many senior staff opposed to the move from Bayfordbury to Norwich and the way it was handled, particularly by the then Director, Kenneth Dodds. The senior staff formed a "protest movement" supported by previous staff including C D Darlington and William JC Lawrence. They formed the Senior Staff Committee to coordinate staff discussions about the future of the Institute, met with and wrote statements and letters to the press, senior scientists, administrators and government officials. WJC Lawrence (1899-1985) joined the John Innes Institute in 1913 as an unpaid garden boy, he joined the scientific staff in 1926 later becoming head of the department of physiology and plant culture and Curator to the institute in 1932. Alongside John Newell he invented the formula for the John Innes Compost. His research included genetical work on the Dahlia and Streptocarpus, plant growth in different environments using the tomato and work on the development of scientific standard glasshouses and growth rooms at Merton and Bayfordbury. He served for a time as acting director and retired from JI in 1963.
