Admin History: A curator at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, asked Bateson to supply a definition of 'variation'. Bateson asked his students to write down their own definitions and a competition was held (Bateson himself entered) to determine the best. Bateson's definition and two others were sent with his letter of reply.
