      Note

Admin History: Provenance unknown. In 2025 Elsie Schulz was identified as likely being Else Schulz, nee Schwarz (b.1882 in Vienna, died Manchester, UK), who fled to the UK with her family from Vienna after 1938. One of Schulz's children died in Norwich in 1993, which perhaps accounts for their presence in the archive. Prior to this identification, evidence in the records identified Elsie as a war refugee from Austria or Germany. She writes in German and later in English and her sketch books document her travels in Europe between 1915-1946 including Austria, Germany, Poland, Croatia and England, where she seemed to settle in 1939. It is possible the collection was acquired due to mistaking her identity for Elizabeth Schultz (1817-1898), a German botanical artist.
