Recordings donated/made by Hugh Rogers of converstions with Sir Frank Engledow, Joseph Burtt Hutchinson and George Douglas Hutton Bell. Interview with Robert James Rosbotham, 1976. NRO notes: Original recordings made 1975-1979; digitized copies made Oct-Dec 2008. (Note AUD refs are for NROCAT) Though there are several recorded conversations involving Sir Frank Engledow, Joseph Burtt Hutchinson and George Douglas Hutton Bell; there appears to have only been two separate recording sessions. Hugh Rogers seems to have regarded the master recordings of both sessions to be on reel [marked by him as] number 3, a copy of which forms AUD 29/8. A secondary copy of the first recording session has been copied to form AUD 29/6 and a secondary copy of the second recording session has been copied to form AUD 29/7 [annotated by Hugh Rogers as being tape 1 and tape 2 respectively]. The relationship between the master copy AUD 29/8 and the secondary copies (AUD 29/6 and AUD 29/7) is complicated because the recordings' durations are not the same, AUD 29/8 (Hugh Rogers' master) is longer than AUD 29/6 (Hugh Rogers' back-up), indicating that some editing has taken place or the machines used in the copying process were not operating at the same speed. An additional recording of the first recorded conversation between Sir Frank Engledow, Joseph Burtt Hutchinson and George Douglas Hutton Bell is held by the John Innes Centre Library and Archives Service but this is a secondary copy of AUD 29/8 and is made up of 3 passes with playback speeds of 3.75 inches (9.525 cm) per second and 1.875 inches (4.7625 cm) per second. Because it appears to be a later generation copy, the Norfolk Sound Archive has not digitized it. [Back-up] of first recorded conversation between Sir Frank Engledow, Joseph Burtt Hutchinson and George Douglas Hutton Bell Quantity: 2 Waveform Audio files (1.53 GB) Archival History: Original reel held by John Innes Centre Archive in the Hugh Rodgers audiovisual collection. Location of originals: John Innes Centre Library and Archives Service ID 20621-1001 (JIC/AV/PBI/2). Original reel was removed from an outer case, which was annotated 'HHR', so that it could be stored in a box, allowing the reel to be stored vertically. The reel is annotated [by Hugh Rogers] as '[tape number] 1'; 'Recorded March 1975, Sir Frank Engledow, Sir Joseph Hutchinson, Dr Douglas Bell'; and 'Red:- track one'. The original recording is on a reel with a diameter of 7 inches (17.78 cm) of audio tape with a guage of 0.25 inch (6.35 mm). There are two separate passes on the original reel. Related material: For copy of paper insert found with original recording used to make this recording, see AUD 29/11/1. Part one [of back-up] of first recorded conversation between Sir Frank Engledow, Joseph Burtt Hutchinson and George Douglas Hutton Bell: Pass 1 from original reel starting with red leader tape. Contains one identifiable recording with one channel recorded (mono) with playback speed of 3.75 inches (9.525 cm) per second. Towards the end of pass there appears to be another recording on an adjacent track implying that the reel from which this copy was made was in fact recorded as four quarter tracks and was itself a copy of a more original recording. The implication is that this recording is at least a second generation copy. Part two [of back-up]: Pass 2 from original reel starting with red leader tape. Contains one identifiable recording with one channel recorded (mono) with playback speed of 3.75 inches (9.525 cm) per second. Back-up of] second recorded conversation between Sir Frank Engledow, Joseph Burtt Hutchinson and George Douglas Hutton Bell Abstract: Original recorded on 26 Mar 1975; digitized on 17 Oct 2008. The original recording is on a reel with a diameter of 7 inches (17.78 cm) of audio tape with guage of 0.25 inch (6.35 mm). Reel's box annotated [by Hugh Rogers] 'Sir F, [track number] 1' and 'Green track 1, 26/3/75, Sir Frank Engledow, Sir Joseph Hutchinson, Dr G.D.H. Bell'; 'Sir F' is written in red ink. The reel is annotated, 'Recorded March 1975, Sir Frank Engledow, Sir Joseph Hutchinson, Dr Douglas Bell', '[recording number] 2', 'green - track 1'; 'Green - track 1' is written in red ink. There is only one pass on the reel, starting with green leader tape containing recording with 1 channel (i.e. a mono recording) and playback speed of 3.75 inches (9.525 cm) per second. Master copy of first and second recorded conversations between Sir Frank Engledow, Joseph Burtt Hutchinson and George Douglas Hutton Bell Abstract: Reel from which this WAV file was made, appears to be a copy of a recording used by Hugh Rogers to create the recording from which AUD 29/6 was made, but without interference from adjacent track. In addition the variations in timing between this recording and AUD 29/6 imply that they are not the same; AUD 29/8/1 is longer than AUD 29/6/1, because it is longer, indicating some information was edited out of AUD 29/6, or the machines used in the copying process were not operating at the same speed. Quantity: 2 Waveform Audio files (1.55 GB) Archival History: Original reel held by John Innes Centre Archive in the Hugh Rodgers audiovisual collection.
