Admin History: This controversy arose from findings in a report by a sub-committee of Merton and Morden District Council suggesting that the local community derived little or no benefit from the presence of the John Innes Horticultural Institution. A major issue was the desire of the Wimbledon Higher Education Committee and and the Rutlish Charity Trustees to secure horticultural training at the Institution for local youths. This proposal was backed by the District Council.
